Food Drive. Monday, May 12th - Wednesday May 21st

"Be a Good Neighbor" Food Drive. We will collect items starting on Monday May 12th through Wednesday May 21st. We are collecting non-perishable items and ask that you do not send anything packaged in glass. All items raised will be given to the Good Neighbors Food pantry to assist families in need of food in the Akron community. Our hope is that by collecting and donating food, our students can feel that they have helped make a difference in their community. See attached fliers for more information.

Deborah Holliday is Sam Salem Teacher of the Year 2025

Hi, I’m Deborah Holliday, and I’m honored to be recognized as Teacher of the Year for this school year for Sam Salem. I have been teaching for 17 years, all within Akron Public Schools, as an Intervention Specialist. Throughout my career, I’ve worked with students in a variety of special education settings, including cross-categorical classrooms, resource rooms, and specialized AIM and ACHIEVE units. No matter the role, my goal has always been the same—to create a welcoming, supportive classroom where every student, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to learn and grow.

I have a strong passion for special education and love finding creative ways to help my students succeed. I use strategies like multisensory instruction and individualized support to ensure all students have access to meaningful learning experiences. I also enjoy collaborating with my colleagues, serving on leadership teams, and helping to create a positive school environment for both students and staff.

Outside of teaching, I’m always looking for new ways to learn and grow. I hold multiple degrees in education, and a doctorate in philosophy, and I love attending workshops, presenting at conferences, and sharing ideas with other educators. When I’m not in the classroom, I enjoy cooking, astrology, and spending time with family and friends. Teaching is more than a job to me—it’s a passion, and I feel lucky to do what I love every day!
